  7. I just bought the GEOS 128 2.0 and in reading the instructions got confused
  8. about the loading of "old" GEOS programs.  If I answer "no", that I have no old
  9. ones, does that mean I won't be able to use any that I buy in the future?  As
  10. far as I can tell, once you answer "no" it is irreversible.

  25.    Here's how it works:

  27.    When you install GEOS, one of the things that happens is your GEOS system
  28. gets "stamped" with a serial number.  When you install add-on packages from
  29. BSW, like geoPublish, for example, they also get stamped with that serial
  30. number, and will not work on a GEOS system with any other serial number.
  31.    If you answer "no", then GEOS goes ahead and creates a new random serial
  32. number.
  33.    If you answer "yes", then the install will request that you place an old
  34. product master disk (not a boot disk) in the drive, from which it will read
  35. your existing serial number, and use that for your new system, instead of
  36. creating a new one.  Since your new system would then have the same serial
  37. number as your old, all your existing packages would still work.

  39.    If you are upgrading from a previous GEOS, and have BSW add-on packages,
  40. then answer "yes".  If this is your first GEOS, or if you never bought any of
  41. the add-ons, then answer "no".
  42.    The change is, indeed, permanent.  Since so many people are confused enough
  43. to get it wrong, BSW will replace the disks for a small fee if you get it
  44. wrong.  I think they're charging $5, but I'm not positive about that.

  56.      Thanks a lot.  You've explained a whole lot more than the instruction
  57. book.  I don't see why they can't explain that to people who have never used
  58. GEOS before.  I'll go ahead and answer no and let the system work itself out.

  70.     I don't know why they can't do something about those instructions, either.
  71. The exact same thing happened when they released the original GEOS 128, with
  72. many people making mistakes and requiring replacement boot disks.  There's no
  73. shame in getting something wrong the first time, but for them to have allowed
  74. the situation to continue is very upsetting.

  82. But what do you do when your 64 serial number is different from your 128 serial
  83. number? When I installed the 128, I didn't have any keyed programs, so I let it
  84. create its own serial number. Now I have have the latest GEODEX from the
  85. 2-for-1 deal and want to try it with the 128, but it is a keyed program and I'm
  86. afraid I'll have problems. So either I'll have to break the key protection of
  87. cough up $5 to get some more original disks. BTW, Joe is working on a patch
  88. program that will automatically change GEODEX into my CD CATALOG, which I have
  89. been doing manually. When we get it done, I plan to upload it here. But there
  90. could be a slight problem if we take seriously BSW's warning not to alter or
  91. modify any of its programs. You know what we went through with Coleman's
  92. CONVERT and I wouldn't want to start another round. From my viewpoint, the
  93. modified program is never intended to be distributed to anyone else and doesn't
  94. defeat any existing protection code. What do you think? Tony

  103. If you only have the GEOS 128 boot disk, you can key all your applications to
  104. it and not have to worry about problems.  And there are a lot of copy programs
  105. (Maverick is one) that have "GEOS toolboxes" included that can remove the copy
  106. protection, so that you can simply make a backup of your original disk and key
  107. THAT to your boot disk.

  109. There are also programs available that will let you edit serial numbers so that
  110. all your disks are keyed alike.  I used that to key my GEOS 64 applications to
  111. my GEOS 128 boot disk, since I misunderstood the instructions when I got GEOS
  112. 128 and answered "no" to the installation question.

  114. While I can see BSW's concern over piracy, it seems to me that their protection
  115. schemes are doing far more harm to honest, legitimate users than they ever do
  116. to pirates.
